Active Directory
Active Directory is part of the directory service of the Windows 2000 operating system. Active Directory manages the identities and associations of the distributed resources that make up the network environment. It stores information about network objects (such as applications, files, printers, and people) and provides a unified way to name, describe, find, access, manage, and protect information about these resources. It is the central authority that manages the identity and negotiates the relationships between these distributed resources so that they can work together.
