Channel Distribution

Products often pass through several companies before reaching the final consumer. This is called channeling.

There are indirect and direct channels. An example of a direct channel is where a consumer can buy directly from a manufacturer. An example of indirect channels is when a wholesaler buys a product from a manufacturer, then it is bought by a retailer and finally by the consumer.

Indirect channels are considered longer and manufacturers run the risk of making less profit on their product because fees or commissions are deducted from the wholesaler.

Direct channels are considered shorter, but they limit the number of ways a customer can purchase a product.
