Digital Dial Tone
A Gartner term that describes the combination of XML and Internet transport protocols such as HTTP, SMTP, and FTP to create a ubiquitous opportunity for structured information exchange. The metaphor is based on the contrast between legacy business-to-business (B2B) messaging, such as Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) with X12, EDI for Administration, Commerce, and Transportation (EDIFACT), and various industry standards. Unstructured means of telephone communication. and fax. The former require significant investment and private networks, or significant bilateral negotiations, to achieve interoperability, while the latter are ubiquitous and largely interoperable. With the Internet and ubiquitous software that implements Internet transport protocols, trading partners can reduce the costs, time, and risks associated with deploying B2B messaging.
By themselves, the Internet transport protocols are not a complete digital audio solution. To securely exchange application messages over the Internet, communication systems must be programmed with additional specifications in key areas such as security, routing and access control. The ubiquity will not be achieved until the integration products agree on standards to meet these needs.
