CH3OH is polar or non-polar, why? I've read a lot, but what's the easiest way to solve it? Is there a rule that applies to all (almost all) such connections?
CH3OH is polar.
The simple rule is: if the halves are equal, it's not polar. For example, CH3CH2CH2CH4, called butane, is half as long as the other, which makes it non-polar. CH3CH2CH2CH2OH is not the same and it is polar.
