Kabutans are very effective if you know how to use them, but they are considered martial arts. Carrying it is a burden in itself and carrying it can be considered a serious crime.
The advantage of carrying Kabutan is that no one will see it in your pocket. If you stop and search (which we call Terry Stop in the US), you will be arrested for conducting a search.
The downside is that unless you do a lot of exercise it will get stuck and you will use it as a thermometer.

I don't know if that's the problem. I have a small flashlight (maglight) on my keychain and it can be used that way. Avoid legal issues here in American cities.
