Pay Per Lead (PPL)
Definition
A payment model for online advertising that only pays for qualified leads.
Information
By paying per lead, the advertiser only pays for the leads generated on their landing page. There are no charges for unregistered visitors.
A lead is usually a record of contact information and possibly demographic information. Usually this is not a currency conversion event. A lead can be simply an email address or a detailed form that spans several pages.
One of the risks for an advertiser is the possibility of fraud by motivated third parties or business partners. Some red herrings are easy to spot. However, it is recommended to check the results regularly.
A commission structure where the advertiser pays the publisher a fixed amount for each qualified lead (customer) who clicks through to the advertiser's website.
