SEM [Search Engine Marketing]
Search engine marketing (or SEM) is a form of marketing where you focus on improving a website's performance in search engines, either through SEO or paid search.
Many people often use SEM to refer to paid search ads. However, this is incorrect and only for historical reasons (such as how PPC is used for paid search).
Paid search used to only allow PPC ads, so PPC stands for paid search and many people still use it that way. Likewise, search engine optimization was primarily a technical skill (often performed by IT administrators) and as such was not considered a form of marketing. And when a way to advertise on search engines emerged, managed by marketing executives, of course the word 'marketing' was used as an acronym to describe it! Marketers like to think of new names for things they want to sell!
However, SEO now encompasses many things (and is not necessarily a technical discipline). This is a separate discipline of digital marketing. That's why paid search and SEO are now lumped together under the umbrella term search marketing.
7 things you should know about SEM
- SEM = Search Engine Marketing SEO = Search Engine Optimization SEA = Search Engine Advertising (but nobody calls it that!)
- Google search results now allow you to target your content, including 'How To': Ads Organic results Instant search Answers Facts Local results News Videos/images Tweets Products
- Since more information appears directly on search results pages, about half of all searches end without clicking the result.
- Some people use SEM to mean *only* paid search, but people also confuse: PPC and paid search, CPM and RPM, CTOR and CTR, etc. Digital marketing is full of minor misunderstandings. Don't keep yours!
- The weird (but obvious) thing about search marketing is that the more space you put on the results page, the more likely someone is to click on your results. Best in research.
- According to SparkToro, users click ads about 7% of the time, compared to 45% for free results.
- If you have an ad *and* a top organic search result on the same search results page, they perform better together than the results of the two combined. It's like the 1+1=3 effect.
Notice those little yellow boxes that say "Advertise" next to the most important links in the search term? It's search engine marketing! Since most users choose the first options that appear in search results, companies pay to put their website at the top in the hope that people will click on their link. This is done using AdWords for Google search results. Other search engines (Bing, Yahoo, etc.) have similar tools.
SEM refers to how companies and brands promote their website in search engines. The two main elements of SEM are paid advertising and search engine optimization.
Search engine marketing through paid and free marketing channels such as PPC and SEO. Search ads include PPC, PPI, and PPA while search engine optimization includes internal and external optimization.
A vague term that can apply to 1. all digital marketing that includes the use of a search engine, or 2. only paid digital marketing that includes a search engine, so: PPC (Payper Click). There is no industry standard for the correct definition, but it is the most commonly used.
Search engine marketing is an umbrella term for digital marketing techniques aimed at increasing a website's visibility in the SERPs.
Ranking or advertising in paid search sometimes refers to all search engine marketing efforts, paid search and organic search.
SEM is the use of paid search engine ad lists to drive traffic to your website. Commonly known as Google Ads (formerly Google AdWords) and Bing Ads, you usually see these paid ads at the top of search results with a small ad icon next to them. They appear because advertisers bid for specific search terms, such as in an auction, and show how much they are willing to pay when someone clicks on their ad. When a user enters a search term, the search engine determines whether the keywords match the search term and auctions the ad. Your ad will only show if it offers enough and has a high Quality Score (a measure of whether your ad matches the search query).
A type of marketing that increases the visibility of a company or product in search engines by paying them to appear in search results for a specific keyword.
Like SEO, SEM is designed to maximize the online promotion of your website. Search engine marketing can include SEO, but the term is more about tactics like paid advertising, paid listings, etc.
