Nothing beats double malt. Just having a malt doesn't mean double or triple etc.
The most common types are:
Single malt is malt made in a distillery that is specially prepared and does not mix with anything else.

In fact, it is both single malt and blended and refers to Scotch Weiss. Single malts are made from a single strain of whiskey in one season. Mixed whiskey is just that, mixed with different whiskeys. For more information, see the link provided.

I think double malt is thicker because it is fermented twice for more flavor. Double malt uses two flavors and is usually delicious and less expensive.
For single or double barrels, usually related to the nature of the smoke flavor, double barrels are more smoky.
