Years ago, Stanley had a lifetime warranty on his tapes. Like those who take broken pieces to pieces and wait for the free version, Stanley had to adapt and change his return policy to eliminate the usual wear and tear. New belts, for example with damaged return springs, are still closed.
Retailers, meanwhile, have their own return policies, which are soft enough for the most part unless you join a group that appears to be at war.
Give it a try, but it's still a bad deal.
