The Fold
The top of a web page or area visible to the user without scrolling down. This gives the user a first impression and directly affects how long the visitor stays on the page, if at all.
The fold is the location on your site where the page is cut off from the bottom of the user's monitor or browser window. Everything below the fold is scrollable, but not directly visible. Search engines prioritize "at the top" content because new visitors see it right away. Too many ads "at the top" can also be seen as a negative problem. (See panda).
The part of your web page that the visitor can see without scrolling. This is the first impression your visitor gets and can affect your bounce rate and the length of their stay.
Here are some guidelines for "top of page" placement:
- Make sure your most interesting content is visible
- Landing pages used for conversion must have a CTA here
- Always show a link to the content at the bottom of the page, so that the visitor doesn't mistakenly think they've seen everything there is to see.
