The Emergency School Kota A Toba was founded in 1905 (the original settlers in the area had to relocate last year). The eastern buildings (many still standing) were built of sandstone blocks excavated by the Navajo and Pi Masons of nearby Moenkopi Wash. The school was built with a bakery, backyard and self-service laundry.

A small agricultural colony was established here in 1878, but it never worked and some people (because they were members of the reserve) were forced to relocate in 1904.

Toba City Boarding School was built by Hank Ham, a famous free diving lover. The Scol was originally intended as a dive training academy, but it became a regular boarding school as the need for general education transcended the concept of a dive training academy. The local legend says that there is a secret room under the school where Hankham hid a golden tobacco which he found in Congo and he was able to give wishes.
