According to the IAB, vertical banner specifically refers to a 120×240 banner ad. Technically, there are other banner sizes that are also vertical in nature. For example, an ad for a skyscraper is much taller than it is wide, but has its own name.

Vertical banners can often be found on the left or right side of a web page. With regular patronage, they are sometimes placed vertically for a mixed effect.
