Homeland Season 9

Homeland Season 9 is just around the corner, and we’re excited to see the return of Carrie Mathison, Saul Berenson, and their partners in crime-fighting at the CIA. While season 8 ended on an explosive note with Carrie running down the sidewalk and yelling into her phone, Get out! Get out now! as she left her brother behind in Russia, there’s still so much to learn about what Homeland Season 9 will have in store. Here are three things you can expect from Homeland Season 9 based on the promo trailers we’ve seen so far!

New characters

Homeland started out with pretty much just Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) and Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis). Now, there are so many characters on Homeland that you can’t keep track of them all.

Some characters have stuck around for years (like Rupert Friend as Peter Quinn and F. Murray Abraham as Dar Adal), while others have been killed off. Showtime is keeping character details under wraps for now, but fans can expect at least a few new faces in Season 9.

The writers also often bring new characters into Homeland season 1, then kill them off later—like Isaac (Mark Ivanir) and Astrid (Nina Hoss), who died in Season 4.

The deaths may be shocking, but they are effective at adding tension and drama to each episode. Carrie’s reaction to her best friend’s death was one of Homeland’s most emotional scenes, especially since she was just starting a romantic relationship with Finn Walden’s character Tom Walker.

Other times, Homeland will just add characters for a few episodes, like when Quinn was in charge of running CIA operations in Pakistan. Fans are also excited to see what Carrie’s new boss is like after Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin) retired at the end of last season.

The bigger Homeland’s cast, though, the more complicated it can be to keep track of everyone. It might be worth keeping a few tabs open on your phone so you don’t get confused if you want to read old recaps of older seasons.

(And speaking of Carrie and Quinn, there are plenty of recaps around in case you need a refresher before jumping into Homeland season 9.)

There are plenty of other new characters from Homeland’s first eight seasons that may be back in season 9. But whether they show up or not, fans can still expect Homeland season 9 to be full of drama when it premieres on January 15, 2019.

Returning characters

As Homeland’s Emmy-winning star Claire Danes promised ahead of season 8, Carrie Mathison (herself an Emmy winner) will return for Homeland season 9, though it remains to be seen whether viewers will find her very different from how they left her at the end of season 8. Carrie is a prisoner, Danes told reporters during a press conference in New York City earlier this year.

In other news, Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis) appeared to die at the end of season 2 and has yet to be seen since. Claire Danes previously said she can’t imagine Homeland without her former love interest, so there’s certainly a chance he’ll pop up again somewhere down the line. However, given that Homeland is an original series, even if Brody were available for future seasons it’s unlikely that he’d appear outside of flashbacks.

Speaking of which, Mandy Patinkin’s Saul Berenson will be back for Homeland season 9. The show’s co-creator Alex Gansa has previously said that he doesn’t think they can come up with a way to bring Saul back in any logical fashion, but we’d like to disagree!

Don’t worry though—if Saul is gone for good (like Lewis’ Brody) he probably won’t be gone forever. Gansa and Co.

Have previously said that they like bringing back deads characters in flashback form, so there’s a chance we’ll see Saul Berenson again on Homeland season 9. The show has already brought back Lewis’ Brody and Danes’ Carrie Mathison (twice!) in flashback form, after all! We can’t help but think Gansa and co.

Will find a way to bring him back, too. If they don’t, we’ll get over it eventually because Saul Berenson is one of our favorite Homeland characters. (Seriously, just ask anyone who’s ever watched an episode with us!)

Nonetheless, if Saul is gone for good, hopefully Homeland season 9 will be a respectful send-off. Whether he’s alive or deads, we’re crossing our fingers that Homeland season 9 handles Berenson with grace and honors everything he brought to one of our favorite shows. (Seriously, just ask anyone who’s ever watched an episode with us!)

Storylines

Last season, we left off with a couple of big plot twists. First, Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis) died in an explosions after being traded to Iran by Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes).

Second, Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin) was arrested and sent to prison for helping Carrie assassinates Brody. We don’t know where Homeland is headed from here; showrunners have said it will follow some different characters during its ninth season.

Other new characters have also been cast. Michael Kelly (House of Cards) will play a character named Doug, who’s described as Carrie’s devoted friend and confidante during her tenure as CIA station chief in Islamabad. Hill Harper is on board as Rupert, who serves as an intelligence analyst working with Carrie at the CIA headquarters in Langley. Seth Gabel and Robert Knepper will play Andrew Larrick and Dad Levine, respectively.

We also don’t know whether Damian Lewis will appear in Homeland season 9. When Lewis’s character died last season, producers were cryptic about whether he could return at some point.

They said Carrie and Brody might meet again in a dream, or a vision, or in a hallucination. Creator and showrunner Alex Gansa has since revealed that he has had conversations with Lewis about how his character could come back if Gansa decided he wanted him to.

After being away for four seasons, there’s no telling if Mandy Patinkin will be in Homeland season 9. Patinkin took a hiatus from his role as Saul Berenson after Homeland season 3 to focus on directing. He also wanted more time with his family and other commitments, such as musical theater work.

We don’t know when Homeland season 9 will premiere. Filming is still in progress, so we wouldn’t expect it to return until 2019. No premiere date has been announced by Showtime, but we will update you as soon as one is confirmed.

And that’s everything we know about Homeland season 9 so far! There are sure to be more developments in production between now and then, and we’ll keep you updated with all of them here on CinemaBlend.
