In poetry you can do whatever you want. Can you tell me why you are asking?

Why are you asking? Imagine that the person you are talking to asks a reason and you repeat it before answering the question.

Why are you asking? The impression is that the person you are talking to has only asked one question and you want to know what is the motive behind it.
